“UP” Motion poster

For this project, we were challenged to tell the story of a movie using a motion poster and the 3D camera in After Effects. I chose Up because I loved the idea of creating the feeling of flying through its colorful and imaginative world.

I started in Adobe Photoshop by cutting out the different layers of my poster to prepare them for animation. Then I brought everything into After Effects and placed the layers on a 3D plane. I added a 3D camera and used smooth, continuous movement to guide the viewer through the scene. The camera floats past balloons and clouds, moves into the main character’s face, and then zooms back out.

To make the world feel more full and alive, I added extra balloons and clouds that enter and exit the frame as the camera moves. This project gave me a chance to combine design, animation, and storytelling. It was recognized with a regional Bronze ADDY Award.
